Julianne Moore and Ellen Page fight for their rights in thus compelling drama based on a heartbreaking true story.
Lionsgate have released the first official trailer for the upcoming biopic drama, Freeheld.
Oscar winner Julianne Moore stars as New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester who has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Having been in a long-term relationship with her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (portrayed by Ellen Page) for six years, Laurel longs for her pension to be passed on to her lover after her death. The couple battle against New Jersey’s board of chosen freeholders to fight for their rights despite not being a heterosexual couple.
Freeheld is based on the 2007 documentary film of the same name which documented the real life of Laurel and her fight against equality. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and earned numerous awards and worldwide acclaim.
Freeheld is directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, 2008), with a script from Oscar winning screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, 1993) and co-stars Oscar nominees Michael Shannon and Steve Carell. The film has already tipped Oscar buzz particularly aimed at Moore, last year’s Best Actress winner.
Freeheld is released in UK cinemas 19 February 2016
